Dutch Transport Minister welcomes BETA ALIA + announcement of Dutch demonstration flights

e-Smart Avia is welcoming international aviation, logistics, and government stakeholders to the Netherlands this week as it conducts a series of demonstration flights of its aircraft choice for services, BETA’s all-electric ALIA CTOL. These demonstration flights are highlighting the company’s ambitions towards a 2027 commencement of commercial operations with the newest next-generation electric air cargo aircraft.

The demonstration flights, taking place on 29 and 30 May 2026, mark the latest important milestone for validating electric aviation in real operational conditions in Europe. During these flights, the aircraft will operate across multiple airports in the Netherlands, and Belgium, demonstrating high performance, reliability, low-noise operations, and integration into existing airport and air traffic environments.

While the initial flights will focus on short-haul cargo operations in Northwestern Europe, e-Smart Avia is positioning itself for broader international expansion.

“These flights are not only about demonstrating technology – they are about demonstrating a new way of operating aviation,” said Jacques Heeremans, co-founder of e-Smart Avia. “We are building the foundation for scalable electric aviation operations with networks based at critical commercial hubs, starting in Europe but with a clear pathway toward other regions where demand for sustainable and efficient air transport is growing rapidly.”

Expanding beyond Europe

Following the demonstration phase, e-Smart Avia is exploring opportunities to deploy electric cargo operations in additional markets, including North America, the Middle East and Asia where geographic conditions and strong demand for time-critical logistics create a natural fit for short- to medium-haul electric aviation, while at the same time providing both sustainable and cost effective solutions.

The company is engaging with regional partners, airports, and authorities to assess how electric aircraft can be integrated into existing logistics and transport ecosystems in these regions, creating strong economic impact and also innovative new possibilities in their value-added product portfolios.

“Electric aviation opens the door not only to cleaner cargo logistics, but also to a new category of cost effective regional transport – quiet, efficient, and closer to where people live and work,” said Stan Wraight, co-founder of e-Smart Avia. “Building on the capabilities of the BETA ALIA platform, including its planned VTOL variants, the company sees opportunities to introduce low-noise, emission-free services on regional routes and also in urban environments, which was never before economically possible.”

From demonstration to commercial operations

The insights gained from the demonstration flights in the Netherlands will support e-Smart Avia’s transition toward scheduled commercial operations targeted for 2027. The company is targeting the launch of initial cargo services in Northwestern Europe, followed by gradual international expansion and the introduction of additional aircraft types as technology and regulatory frameworks mature. The route and hub network development will be closely coordinated with the customer portfolio of the e-Smart Group, including airlines and other major logistics service providers.

About e-Smart Avia

e-Smart Avia is developing a new generation of electric aviation operations, focused on emission-free, low-noise cargo and any other solutions the market may request. The company aims to build scalable electric air networks, starting in Europe and expanding internationally, leveraging BETA aircraft such as the ALIA CTOL and future electric VTOL platforms. e-Smart Avia will be working alongside BETA as larger and more advanced aircraft models are introduced in the coming decades.

About BETA Technologies

BETA Technologies is an aerospace company developing electric aircraft and charging infrastructure to enable the transition to sustainable aviation. Its ALIA platform includes both conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) and planned vertical take-off (VTOL) variants designed for cargo and passenger applications.

BETA about e-Smart Avia

“We’re excited to support e-Smart Avia as they take this step toward bringing their electric cargo operations to Europe,” said Patrick Buckles, Regional Head of Aircraft Sales at BETA Technologies. “Their focus on practical, high-value logistics aligns closely with how we see electric aviation making a real near-term impact, and we’re proud to help build the cargo networks of the future.”

Royal Schiphol Group about e-Smart Avia

“These demonstration flights provide valuable insights into what electric aviation can mean for the decarbonization of air cargo. The fact that Schiphol is one of the locations involved allows us to experience first-hand what this development looks like in practice. We also see opportunities for Schiphol Group’s regional airports, where there is room to test, further develop, and scale electric aviation.” Eduard Molkenboer, Head of Cargo at Schiphol.
